Cloud-based recovery of backed up data using auxiliary copy replication and on-demand failover resources

A computer-implemented method comprising:

• by a first computing device comprising one or more hardware processors, orchestrating a failover job within a cloud computing environment, wherein the first computing device operates outside the cloud computing environment, and wherein orchestrating the failover job comprises:
• causing a first virtual machine to be activated in a cloud computing environment;
• causing a data agent that executes on the first virtual machine to create a second virtual machine in the cloud computing environment, wherein the second virtual machine is based on a compute attribute of a data source that generated first data, wherein a backup copy of the first data is stored in persistent storage in the cloud computing environment;
• causing one or more of the data agent and a media agent that executes on the first virtual machine to activate a data storage resource in the cloud computing environment, wherein the data storage resource is distinct from the persistent storage;
• causing the data agent and the media agent to restore the backup copy into a primary data format, resulting in restored data, which is stored by the media agent at the data storage resource;
• causing the second virtual machine to be activated;
• and
• causing the data storage resource to attach to the second virtual machine, wherein the restored data is accessible, in the primary data format, to one or more of:
• the second virtual machine, a file system comprising the restored data, and an application that executes at the second virtual machine;
• and
• wherein the first virtual machine, the second virtual machine, and the data storage resource are activated on demand as part of the failover job.
