Abstract
An embodiment includes detecting by a Process Monitor of a system, a hot upgrade from a first version to a second version. The embodiment includes responsive to the detecting the hot upgrade, predicting by a Process Analyzer a predicted process instance. The embodiment includes generating by the Process Analyzer an upgrade workflow based on a current process instance, a progress metric of the current process instance and the predicted process instance. The embodiment also includes deploying by a Device Upgrade Manager the hot upgrade to the second version on a device of the system based on the upgrade workflow.

A computer-implemented method in edge computing environment, comprising:
- monitoring, by a Process Monitor of a system, software versions deployed on a plurality of edge devices and recording current process instances running on the plurality of edge devices, each current process instance including, a task executing on an edge device of the plurality of edge devices, and a software version executing the task;
- detecting, by the Process Monitor, a hot upgrade from a first version to a second version for at least one of the plurality of edge devices while the task is executing;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, determining, by a Process Analyzer, a progress metric for at least one of the current process instances by invoking, via a Process Controller, one or more application programming interface (API) functions on the edge device of the plurality of edge devices to obtain a measure of progress including an estimated time until completion of the task;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, predicting, by the Process Analyzer, a predicted process instance;
- generating, by the Process Analyzer, an upgrade workflow based on the current process instances, the progress metric of the current process instances, and the predicted process instance, the upgrade workflow specifying,
- a reserved number of edge devices to remain deployed with the first version during the hot upgrade and
- a hold on an operation task and resuming the operation task that is executing on an edge device selected for upgrade;
- and
- deploying, by a Device Upgrade Manager, the hot upgrade to the second version on one or more edge devices based on the upgrade workflow by sending upgrade commands to upgrade edge devices not included in the reserved number and resuming any held task after completion of the hot upgrade.
A computer program product comprising one or more computer readable storage media, and program instructions collectively stored on the one or more computer readable storage media, the program instructions executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
- monitoring, by a Process Monitor of a system, software versions deployed on a plurality of edge devices and recording current process instances running on the plurality of edge devices, each current process instance including, a task executing on an edge device of the plurality of edge devices, and a software version executing the task;
- detecting, by the Process Monitor, a hot upgrade from a first version to a second version for at least one of the plurality of edge devices while the task is executing;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, determining, by a Process Analyzer, a progress metric for at least one of the current process instances by invoking, via a Process Controller, one or more application programming interface (API) functions on the edge device of the plurality of edge devices to obtain a measure of progress including an estimated time until completion of the task;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, predicting, by the Process Analyzer, a predicted process instance;
- generating, by the Process Analyzer, an upgrade workflow based on the current process instances, the progress metric of the current process instances, and the predicted process instance, the upgrade workflow specifying,
- a reserved number of edge devices to remain deployed with the first version during the hot upgrade and
- a hold on an operation task and resuming the operation task that is executing on an edge device selected for upgrade;
- and
- deploying, by a Device Upgrade Manager, the hot upgrade to the second version on one or more edge devices based on the upgrade workflow by sending upgrade commands to upgrade edge devices not included in the reserved number and resuming any held task after completion of the hot upgrade.
A computer system comprising a processor and one or more computer readable storage media, and program instructions collectively stored on the one or more computer readable storage media, the program instructions executable by the processor to cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
- monitoring, by a Process Monitor of a system, software versions deployed on a plurality of edge devices and recording current process instances running on the plurality of edge devices, each current process instance including, a task executing on an edge device of the plurality of edge devices, and a software version executing the task;
- detecting, by the Process Monitor, a hot upgrade from a first version to a second version for at least one of the plurality of edge devices while the task is executing;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, determining, by a Process Analyzer, a progress metric for at least one of the current process instances by invoking, via a Process Controller, one or more application programming interface (API) functions on the edge device of the plurality of edge devices to obtain a measure of progress including an estimated time until completion of the task;
- responsive to detecting the hot upgrade, predicting, by the Process Analyzer, a predicted process instance;
- generating, by the Process Analyzer, an upgrade workflow based on the current process instances, the progress metric of the current process instances, and the predicted process instance, the upgrade workflow specifying,
- a reserved number of edge devices to remain deployed with the first version during the hot upgrade and
- a hold on an operation task and resuming the operation task that is executing on an edge device selected for upgrade;
- and
- deploying, by a Device Upgrade Manager, the hot upgrade to the second version on one or more edge devices based on the upgrade workflow by sending upgrade commands to upgrade edge devices not included in the reserved number and resuming any held task after completion of the hot upgrade.
