Color liquid crystal displays and display backlights

A display comprising:

• a display panel and
• a backlight for generating light comprising a combination of a blue light, a red light, and a green light;
• wherein the backlight comprises:
• an excitation source for generating the blue light with a wavelength of maximum intensity in a range from 445 nm to 465 nm;
• and
• a wavelength converting phosphor film comprising a first layer containing K2SiF6:Mn4+ or K2GeF6:Mn4 for converting at least a part of the blue light to the red light with a wavelength of maximum intensity in a range from 610 nm to 650 nm, and a second layer containing SrGa2S4:Eu for converting at least a part of the blue light to the green light with a wavelength of maximum intensity in a range from 525 nm to 545 nm;
• wherein the wavelength converting phosphor film is located remotely to the excitation source and disposed between the excitation source and the display panel, and the wavelength converting phosphor film has an optical path such that the blue light enters the first layer and unconverted blue light then passes into the second layer.
