Abstract
Systems and techniques can prevent reflux induced laryngospasm and the pathologies resulting therefrom, including (but not limited to) sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Claims24
A method for preventing sudden unexplained death from epilepsy (SUDEP), the method comprising:
- detecting, based on first data collected by a first sensor, seizure activity in a subject, the seizure activity indicating an occurrence of a seizure in the subject;
- evaluating second data comprising respiration data, at least a portion of the respiration data collected during the seizure activity by a second sensor;
- determining, based on the first data and the second data, whether the seizure activity is a first type of seizure activity or a second type of seizure activity based on a characteristic of the seizure activity in the subject, the characteristic of the seizure activity comprising a respiratory or cardiac dysfunction;
- and
- in response to determining that the seizure activity is the second type of seizure activity providing an electrical stimulation signal to at least a gastric nerve.
2 more elements
A system for preventing sudden unexplained death from epilepsy (SUDEP), the system comprising:
- a first sensor configured to collect first data;
- a second sensor configured to collect second data;
- an electrode;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- receive the first data collected by the first sensor;
- detect, based on the first data, seizure activity in a subject, the detected seizure activity indicative of an ongoing seizure event;
- evaluate the second data collected at least in part during the ongoing seizure event by the second sensor, the second data comprising respiration data;
- determine, based at least on the second data, a classification of the ongoing seizure event in the subject as a first type of seizure event or a second type of seizure event;
- and
- in response to determining that the ongoing seizure event is the first type of seizure event, transmit an instruction to the electrode to provide electrical stimulation signal to a vagus nerve of the subject or in response to determining that the ongoing seizure event is the second type of seizure event, transmit an electrical stimulation signal to the electrode to provide electrical stimulation to at least a gastric nerve of the subject.

A method for preventing sudden unexplained death from epilepsy (SUDEP), the method comprising:
- detecting, based on first data collected by a first sensor, seizure activity in a subject, the seizure activity indicating an occurrence of a seizure in the subject;
- evaluating second data comprising respiration data, at least a portion of the respiration data of the second data collected during the seizure activity by a second sensor;
- determining, based on the first data and the second data that the seizure activity is a first type of seizure activity based on a characteristic of the seizure activity in the subject, the characteristic of the seizure activity comprising a respiratory or cardiac dysfunction;
- in response to determining that the seizure activity is the first type of seizure activity providing an electrical stimulation signal to a vagus nerve;
- detecting, based on third data collected by the first sensor, seizure activity in the subject, the seizure activity indicating an occurrence of a seizure in the subject;
- evaluating fourth data comprising respiration data, at least a portion of the respiration data of the fourth data collected during the seizure activity by the second sensor;
- determining, based on the third data and the fourth data that the seizure activity is a second type of seizure activity based on a characteristic of the seizure activity in the subject, the characteristic of the seizure activity comprising a respiratory or cardiac dysfunction;
- and
- in response to determining that the seizure activity is the second type of seizure activity providing an electrical stimulation signal to at least a gastric nerve.
