Abstract
According to various embodiments, systems, devices and methods for modulating targeted nerve fibers (e.g., hepatic neuromodulation) are provided. The systems may be configured to access tortuous anatomy of or adjacent hepatic vasculature. The systems may be configured to target nerves within a wall of (e.g., within adventitia surrounding a lumen of) an artery or other blood vessel, such as the common hepatic artery.
Claims22
A neuromodulation system comprising:
- a catheter including a balloon and a therapeutic element at a distal portion of the catheter, wherein the therapeutic element is configured to deliver energy to one or more nerves proximate a hepatic blood vessel, the hepatic blood vessel having a blood vessel wall;
- a fluid delivery device;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- control the fluid delivery device to deliver a fluid to the balloon to expand the balloon within the hepatic blood vessel, and
- control the fluid delivery device to circulate, when the balloon is expanded within the hepatic blood vessel, the fluid through the balloon to maintain a continuous contact pressure of the balloon against the blood vessel wall while the therapeutic element delivers energy to the one or more nerves proximate the hepatic blood vessel,
- wherein the circulated fluid cools the blood vessel wall while the therapeutic element delivers energy to the one or more nerves proximate the hepatic blood vessel.
4 more elements
A method comprising:
- delivering, by a therapeutic element at a distal portion of a catheter, energy to one or more nerves proximate a hepatic blood vessel, the hepatic blood vessel having a blood vessel wall;
- delivering, by a fluid delivery device, a fluid to a balloon at the distal portion of the catheter to expand the balloon within the hepatic blood vessel;
- and
- circulating, by the fluid delivery device and when the balloon is expanded within the hepatic blood vessel, the fluid through the balloon to maintain a continuous contact pressure of the balloon against the blood vessel wall and to cool the blood vessel wall while the therapeutic element delivers energy to the one or more nerves proximate the hepatic blood vessel.
