An apparatus comprising a string for insertion into the oesophagus of a patient, the string comprising proximal end and a distal end, wherein the string forms a structure at the distal end thereof to assist in the insertion of the string into the patient.

An apparatus consisting essentially of a string for insertion into the oesophagus of a patient, the string comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the string forms a coiled structure at the distal end, wherein the structure is configured to enter the stomach and assist in the insertion of the string into the oesophagus of the patient without use of a capsule, wherein the distal end of the string is treated to confer rigidity on the structure and the distal end of the string is more rigid than the proximal end.
