## Abstract

Methods and systems for rendering a watermark, can involve creating a digital watermark by applying grayscale inversion and contrast reduction to a document, resulting in a visually distinguishable pattern and rendering a digital watermark on the document in a manner that allows verification at different viewing angles. The digital watermark can be created using a digital swatch sheet of multiple gray values. The document can be viewed varying angles to verify the validity of the document based on the visibility and characteristics of the digital watermark. The digital watermark may be modified on predetermined parameters to facilitate enhanced security against fraud.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for rendering a watermark, comprising:
creating a digital watermark by applying grayscale inversion and contrast reduction to a document, resulting in a visually distinguishable pattern, wherein creating the digital watermark includes creating a digital swatch sheet of multiple gray values; and
rendering a digital watermark on the document in a manner that allows verification at different viewing angles.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the digital watermark comprises a monochromatic watermark.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
viewing the document at varying angles to verify a validity of the document based on the visibility and characteristics of the digital watermark.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
modifying the digital watermark based on predetermined parameters to facilitate enhanced security against fraud.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
viewing the document at varying angles to verify a validity of the document based on the visibility and characteristics of the digital watermark; and
modifying the digital watermark based on predetermined parameters to facilitate enhanced security against fraud.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein rendering the digital watermark on the document in a manner that allows verification at different viewing angles, further comprises:
rendering the digital watermark in a monochrome application.

### Claim 7

A method for rendering a digital watermark, comprising:
in a first viewing mode, viewing a digital swatch sheet on a screen and verifying that a predefined text is darker than a background, wherein the digital swatch sheet is initially configured with multiple gray values;
in a second viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that a second predefined text is lighter than the background;
at a second angle, verifying that the inverse of the first and second viewing modes is true;
at a third angle, verifying that the digital watermark virtually disappears with respect to at least two gray swatches on the digital swatch sheet, wherein the at least two gray swatches are based on the multiple gray values.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 further comprising adding at least one working patch to a digital document based on the verified digital watermark.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein the verified digital watermark comprises a monochromatic watermark.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 further comprising adding at least one working patch to a digital document based on the verified digital watermark, wherein the verified digital watermark comprises a monochromatic watermark.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 wherein in the first viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that the predefined text is darker than the background, further comprises:
verifying that the verifying that the predefined text is darker than the background in one part of the digital watermark.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11 wherein in the second viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that the second predefined text is lighter than the background, further comprises:
verifying that the second predefined text is lighter than the background in another part of the digital watermark.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7 further comprising generating the digital swatch sheet with multiple gray values by arranging in a predefined layout digital representations of a plurality of gray values among the multiple gray values.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13 further comprising providing a user interface for customizing an arrangement and an organization of the digital representations within the digital swatch sheet.

### Claim 15

A system for rendering a digital watermark, comprising:
at least one processor and a memory, the memory storing instructions to cause the at least one processor to perform:
in a first viewing mode, viewing a digital swatch sheet on a screen and verifying that a predefined text is darker than a background, wherein the digital swatch sheet is initially configured with multiple gray values;
in a second viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that a second predefined text is lighter than the background;
at a second angle, verifying that the inverse of the first and second viewing modes is true; and
at a third angle, verifying that the digital watermark virtually disappears with respect to at least two gray swatches on the digital swatch sheet, wherein the at least two gray swatches are based on the multiple gray values.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15 wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to perform: adding at least one working patch to a digital document based on the verified digital watermark.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15 wherein the verified digital watermark comprises a monochromatic watermark.

### Claim 18 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15 wherein the instructions further cause the at least one processor to perform adding at least one working patch to a digital document based on the verified digital watermark, wherein the verified digital watermark comprises a monochromatic watermark.

### Claim 19 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15 wherein in the first viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that the predefined text is darker than the background, further comprises:
verifying that the verifying that the predefined text is darker than the background in one part of the digital watermark.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method of claim 19 wherein in the second viewing mode, viewing the digital swatch sheet on the screen and verifying that the second predefined text is lighter than the background, further comprises:
verifying that the second predefined text is lighter than the background in another part of the digital watermark.
