Abstract
An insulation component, comprising a first foam layer having a first density and a second foam layer coupled to the first foam layer. The second foam layer has a second density less than the first density. The first and second foam layers comprise a similar material. The insulation component includes an average sound absorption coefficient between 0.1 and 0.4.
Claims20
An insulation component comprising:
- a first foam layer having a first density, and a first R-value between 4.5 and 8 per inch of thickness;
- a second foam layer coupled to the first foam layer, wherein the second foam layer has a second density less than the first density and a second R-value less than the first R-value;
- and
- a third foam layer coupled to the second foam layer, wherein:
- the third foam layer has a third density less than the second density;
- the first foam layer, second foam layer, and third foam layer are coupled together free of an intervening layer;
- the first and second foam layers comprise a similar material;
- and
- the first density, second density, and third density define a density gradient that at least partially provides an average sound absorption coefficient between 0.1 and 0.4 to the insulation component.

An insulation component comprising:
- a first foam layer having a closed-cell structure and a first density, and a first R-value between 4.5 and 8 per inch of thickness;
- a second foam layer coupled to the first foam layer, wherein:
- the second foam layer includes a second R-value less than the first R-value;
- the second foam layer having an open-cell structure;
- and
- the second foam layer has a second density less than the first density;
- and
- a third foam layer coupled to the second foam layer, wherein:
- the third foam layer has a third density less than the second density;
- the first foam layer, second foam layer, and third foam layer are coupled together free of an intervening layer;
- the first and second foam layers comprise a similar material;
- and
- the first density, second density, and third density define a density gradient that at least partially provides an average sound absorption coefficient between 0.1 and 0.4 to the insulation component.

A method comprising:
- providing a first polyol;
- adding a first isocyanate to the first polyol to form a first foam core, wherein the first foam core includes a first density and a first R-value between 4.5 and 8 per inch of thickness;
- providing a second polyol;
- adding a second isocyanate to the second polyol to form a second foam core, wherein:
- the second foam core includes a second R-value less than the first R-value
- the second foam core has a second density less than the first density;
- and
- the first and second foam cores comprise a similar material;
- and
- coupling the first foam core to the second foam core;
- and
- coupling a third foam core to the second foam core together to form an insulation component, wherein:
- the third foam core has a third density less than the second density;
- the first foam core, second foam core, and third foam core are coupled together free of an intervening layer;
- and
- the first density, second density, and third density define a density gradient that at least partially provides an average sound absorption coefficient between 0.1 and 0.4 to the insulation component.
