Abstract
A continuous subcutaneous infusion catheter includes an elongate flexible cannula and a plurality of holes through the cannula wall that are positioned both along the axial length of the cannula and radially around the cannula. The proximal end of the cannula is configured to be attached to a pump, and the distal end of the flexible cannula is atraumatic. The catheter can be used to deliver insulin to a patient.
Claims43
A continuous subcutaneous insulin-infusion catheter comprising:
- an elongate flexible cannula, the elongate flexible cannula having:
- a cannula wall;
- a proximal end configured to be attached to a subcutaneous infusion pump;
- a distal end configured to be substantially atraumatic;
- a continuous coiled reinforcing filament made from stainless steel;
- and
- a plurality of side holes extending through the cannula wall;
- and
- an insulin reservoir adapted and configured to couple to and deliver insulin to the elongate flexible cannula;
- wherein the coiled reinforcing filament is configured to prevent the elongate flexible cannula from kinking when inserted into an implantation site;
- wherein the coiled reinforcing filament includes at least 20 turns per millimeter of the cannula;
- wherein the plurality of side holes are arranged in a helical pattern along the axial length of the elongate flexible cannula;
- wherein a longitudinal distance from a proximal-most side hole of the plurality of side holes to a distal-most side hole of the plurality of side holes is approximately 3 to 10 mm.
A continuous subcutaneous insulin-infusion catheter system, comprising:
- an elongate flexible cannula, the elongate flexible cannula having a cannula wall and a proximal portion with a proximal end and a distal portion with a distal end, the proximal end configured to be attached to a subcutaneous infusion pump and the distal end configured to be substantially atraumatic when inserted into a subcutaneous tissue, the elongate flexible cannula comprising a coiled reinforcing filament made from stainless steel, wherein the coiled reinforcing filament is configured to prevent the elongate flexible cannula from kinking when inserted into an implantation site;
- and
- a plurality of side holes in the distal portion extending through the cannula wall, wherein the plurality of sides holes are arranged in a helical pattern along a length of the cannula wall, wherein a longitudinal distance from a proximal-most side hole to a distal-most side hole is approximately 3 to 10 mm;
- and
- an insulin reservoir adapted and configured to couple to and deliver insulin to the elongate flexible cannula;
- wherein the coiled reinforcing filament includes at least 20 turns per millimeter of the cannula;
- wherein the elongate flexible cannula comprises a polymer configured to increase flexibility as the polymer increases from room temperature to body temperature after implantation;
- wherein the proximal portion is more flexible than the distal portion;
- and wherein the proximal portion is textured to promote adhesion of dermis tissue thereto.
