Abstract
An actuator array includes an elongated base and a plurality of pneumatic actuator elements removably attached to the base. The base is made of a pliant and inextensible material. The actuator elements are configured to be inflated and interfere with each other in use to generate a bending motion supported by the base. At least one parameter associated with the actuator elements is selected to control a three-dimensional (3-D) profile of the bending motion.
Claims5
An exoskeleton comprising, in combination:
- a garment article wearable on a body of a user, having a base and a plurality of inflatable actuator elements attached to the base and arranged in proximity to form an array, wherein each of the plurality of inflatable actuator elements is independently removable from the base and is inflatable to an inflated position;
- wherein at least one of the plurality of inflatable actuator elements collides against an adjacent inflatable actuator element when the inflatable actuator elements are in the inflated position;
- and
- the array comprises a first anterior actuator array configured to be mounted between a first midpoint on an anterior plane of a thigh of the user, traversing a line parallel to an axis of the thigh, and terminating just below a 10th rib of the user.
