Abstract
A plate and cage assembly for stabilization of vertebral bodies. The assembly includes at least one fixation member, a cage having a proximal wall, a superior surface and an inferior surface (the superior surface and the inferior surface for engaging adjacent vertebrae), and a plate coupled to the cage and having at least one hole traversing the plate at an angle for insertion of the at least one fixation member into one of the vertebral bodies. The proximal wall of the cage has a blind hole, and the plate has a threaded screw hole aligned with the blind hole in the proximal wall of the cage.
Claims20
An assembly for stabilization of adjacent vertebral bodies, comprising:
- a cage having a proximal wall, a distal wall, opposing sidewalls, a superior surface and an inferior surface, the superior surface and the inferior surface for respectively engaging the adjacent vertebral bodies;
- and
- a plate coupled to the cage at the proximal wall, the plate having at least one hole traversing the plate at an angle for insertion of at least one bone fastener into one of the adjacent vertebral bodies,
- wherein:
- the cage has an engagement hole in the proximal wall for engaging with a tip portion of an insertion device,
- the plate has an alignment hole extending therethrough and aligned with the engagement hole in the proximal wall,
- the cage comprises an engagement flange disposed on a proximal side of the cage adjacent the plate,
- the plate comprises an engagement channel configured to be coupled to the engagement flange of the cage,
- the engagement channel and the engagement flange are configured to secure the plate to the cage,
- the cage comprises a body section extending away from a distal end of the cage, toward the plate, and underneath both the engagement flange of the cage and the engagement channel of the plate;
- and
- the engagement hole in the proximal wall of the cage is disposed at least partially in the body section of the cage.
A system for stabilization of vertebral bodies,
- comprising:
- a plate and cage assembly;
- and
- an insertion tool for inserting the plate and cage assembly between two of the vertebral bodies,
- wherein the insertion tool comprises:
- a carriage for holding at least one bone fastener by at least one clip having two opposing resilient arms and two opposing clasps attached respectively to the two opposing resilient arms, wherein the carriage comprises a chamber housing including separate enclosed curved path sections, the at least one bone fastener is held in the chamber housing of the carriage prior to insertion, and the at least one bone fastener is driven along at least one of the separate enclosed curved path sections inside the chamber housing and inserted into at least one of the two vertebral bodies;
- and
- push rods for pushing the at least one bone fastener through the carriage, through the plate and cage assembly, and into the at least one of the two vertebral bodies.
A system for stabilization of vertebral bodies, comprising:
- a plate and cage assembly;
- and
- an insertion tool for inserting the plate and cage assembly between two of the vertebral bodies,
- wherein the insertion tool comprises:
- a carriage for holding at least one bone fastener by at least one clip having two opposing resilient arms and two opposing clasps attached respectively to the two opposing resilient arms, and
- push rods for pushing the at least one bone fastener through the carriage, through the plate and cage assembly, and into the at least one of the two vertebral bodies, and
- wherein the push rods comprise three rods arranged to push a) two superior bone fasteners of the at least one bone fastener and b) an inferior bone fastener of the at least one bone fastener into the two vertebral bodies simultaneously.
