Abstract
Systems and methods of the invention generally relate to prolonging viability of bodily tissue, especially lung tissue, through the use of an expandable accumulator to maintain a constant pressure within the lumen of the organ even during external pressure fluctuations due to, for example, flight. Systems and methods may include prolonging donor organ viability in storage through the use of an organ container that mimics the geometry and orientation of the organ in vivo.
Claims11
A system for storage of a donor organ comprising:
- a storage container configured to receive a donor organ and a lid configured to be positioned on the storage container to form an insulated environment;
- a tray configured to be suspended above the donor organ in the storage container, the tray configured to receive a cooling material, wherein the tray comprises:
- a support surface;
- and
- a wall extending from the support surface, wherein the wall limits lateral movement of the cooling material when the cooling material is received by the tray;
- and
- a temperature sensor configured to be positioned beneath the donor organ when the donor organ is received by the storage container to measure a temperature within the storage container.
The system of 4, wherein the support surface of the tray, the tray walls, and the lid are configured to surround the cooling material.
A system for storage of a donor organ comprising:
- a storage container configured to receive a donor organ and a lid configured to be positioned on the storage container to form an insulated environment, wherein the storage container comprises:
- a plurality of latches configured to be secured to a plurality of protrusions of the lid;
- and
- a handle and wheels disposed adjacent a back wall of the storage container;
- a basket configured to be positioned in the storage container, the basket comprising an organ support surface configured to support the donor organ;
- a tray configured to be suspended above the donor organ in the storage container, the tray configured to receive a first cooling material, wherein the tray comprises:
- a second support surface;
- and
- a plurality of walls extending vertically from the second support surface to form at least two walled sides of the tray, the tray comprising a side that lacks walls, the walled sides of the tray configured to prevent lateral movement of the cooling material and the side of the tray that lacks walls configured to allow lateral movement of the cooling material;
- a temperature sensor configured to be positioned beneath the donor organ when the donor organ is received by the storage container;
- a temperature sensor support configured to hold the temperature sensor, wherein the temperature sensor is positioned to avoid contact with a second cooling material in the storage container;
- and
- a display provided on an exterior of the storage container, wherein the temperature sensor is connected to the display with a flexible cable extending through a wall of the storage container.
