System for the reuse of heat in a data center

A method for thermally managing a data center, comprising:

• circulating data center coolant through a data center cooling loop coupled to the data center and a thermal storage tank defining an internal coolant volume and containing a liquid coolant, including delivering heated data center coolant to the thermal storage tank and delivering cooled data center coolant to the data center;
• thermally exchanging heat between the data center cooling loop and the liquid coolant through a heating coil disposed within and immersed in the internal coolant volume and thermally coupled to the data center cooling loop;
• absorbing temperature fluctuation of the liquid coolant, by a passive stabilizer, through latent heat of phase change;
• thermally exchanging heat between a heat pump and the liquid coolant through a condenser coil disposed within and immersed in the internal coolant volume and thermally coupled to the heat pump;
• thermally exchanging heat between a heat dissipation subsystem and the liquid coolant through a cooling coil disposed within and immersed in the internal coolant volume and thermally coupled to the heat dissipation subsystem;
• modifying, by an active stabilizer comprising the heat pump and coupled to the thermal storage tank, the liquid coolant to a modified temperature meeting a temperature stabilization requirement;
• wherein thermal exchange between the data center cooling loop, the heat pump, and the heat dissipation subsystem occurs within the internal coolant volume of the thermal storage tank;
• and
• wherein the heat pump provides a fluctuation-mitigating thermal capacity sufficient to counteract temperature variation of the liquid coolant rather than to handle a full thermal load of the data center.
