Abstract
Examples described herein relate to decoding and encoding signals. A method of performing signal enhancement operations on one or more portions of a signal is described, wherein the performing is based at least in part on information embedded in one or more values received in one or more encoded data layers transmitted within a stream of encoded data, and wherein said values are associated with transformed coefficients intended to be processed by a decoder for deriving elements of the signal, wherein the information indicates an impairment associated with a portion of the signal.
Claims17
A method of performing signal enhancement operations on one or more portions of a signal,
- wherein:
- the performing is based at least in part on information embedded in one or more values received in one or more encoded data layers transmitted within a stream of encoded data,
- said values are associated with transformed coefficients intended to be processed by a decoder for deriving elements of the signal,
- the information indicates an impairment associated with a portion of the signal,
- the one or more values comprise quantized residual values configured to carry both residual data for signal reconstruction and signaling information relating to one or more signal impairments,
- the decoder selectively interprets at least a subset of the quantized residual values as the signaling information rather than as residual data,
- the signaling information controls application of one or more signal enhancement operations to the portion of the signal associated with the impairment.
A method of encoding a signal comprising:
- encoding transformed coefficients for signal reconstruction by reserving one or more quantized symbols of a given coefficient group to provide embedded signalling information for signal enhancement operations to be performed on one or more portions of the signal to correct one or more impairments detected in the signal,
- wherein:
- the one or more quantized symbols comprise quantized residual values configured to carry both residual data for signal reconstruction and signaling information relating to one or more signal impairments,
- user data specifying impairment information is embedded into a last n least significant bits of the one or more quantized symbols, and
- said encoding comprises partitioning bits of the quantized symbol and applying a higher level of quantization to the transformed coefficients representing the residual data such that a non-signalling component of the quantized symbol remains for residual reconstruction.
A decoder configured to:
- perform signal enhancement operations on one or more portions of a signal,
- wherein:
- the performing is based at least in part on information embedded in one or more values received in one or more encoded data layers transmitted within a stream of encoded data,
- said values are associated with transformed coefficients intended to be processed by a decoder for deriving elements of the signal,
- the information indicates an impairment associated with a portion of the signal,
- the one or more values comprise quantized residual values configured to carry both residual data for signal reconstruction and signaling information relating to one or more signal impairments,
- the decoder selectively interprets at least a subset of the quantized residual values as the signaling information rather than as residual data, and
- the signaling information controls application of one or more signal enhancement operations to the portion of the signal associated with the impairment.
