Power capability detection for wireless power transmission based on receiver power request

A power transmitter for wireless power transfer, the power transmitter comprising:

• a controller comprising:
• at least one processor;
• at least one machine-readable medium;
• and
• program instructions stored on the at least one machine-readable medium which, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the controller to:
• receive a first power request for wireless power at a first power level;
• based on the first power request, provide a second power request to an external power supply for direct current (DC) input power at or above a second power level, wherein the second power level comprises a minimum DC input power level required, as input to the power transmitter, for providing wireless power at the first power level to a power receiver;
• provide a power control signal to the external power supply based on the first power request, wherein the external power supply (i) is configured to provide the DC input power to an inverter circuit based on the power control signal and (ii) comprises (a) a voltage regulator and (b) a power supply controller that is configured to (1) receive the power control signal, (2) based on the received power control signal, generate voltage regulation instructions for altering a DC voltage of the DC input power, and (3) provide the voltage regulation instructions to the voltage regulator to control the DC voltage of the DC input power;
• provide a driving signal to an inverter circuit for generating an output power signal;
• monitor the output power signal at a coil, the output power signal based on the driving signal;
• determine that the monitored output power signal satisfies the first power level;
• and
• based on determining that the monitored output power signal satisfies the first power level, verify power compliance for the external power supply;
• the inverter circuit configured to receive the DC input power from the external power supply, receive the driving signal from the controller, and convert the DC input power to the output power signal;
• and
• the coil configured to receive the output power signal from the inverter circuit and transmit the output power signal.
