A method for operating a motor vehicle, the motor vehicle has a drive device and multiple X-by-wire control devices. A central computer of the motor vehicle determines an overall status from status messages transmitted by the control devices and controls the drive device and/or the control devices on the basis of the overall status.

A method for operating a motor vehicle, wherein the motor vehicle has a drive device and multiple X-by-wire control devices, wherein a central computer of the motor vehicle determines an overall status comprising an overall residual running variable from status messages that include residual running variables transmitted by the control devices and controls the drive device and the multiple control devices based on the overall status, wherein the drive device is controlled based on whether the overall residual running variable has expired.
