Abstract
A method and system for image processing are disclosed. A method for image processing by one or more central processing units (CPU) may include detecting an overlap pattern for a set of slice images of a porous media sample, based on the overlap pattern, determining a set of overlap distances for the set of slice images of the porous media sample, and registering, based on at least the set of overlap distances, a composite image comprising any of the set of slice images of the porous media sample.

A method for image processing by one or more processors comprising:
- scanning one or more 2D slice images to form a set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- detecting, at one or more central processing units (CPUs), an overlap pattern for a first 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample and a first adjacent 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images that is overlapping the first 2D slice image, wherein the overlap pattern is based on mutual information shared by the first 2D slice image and first adjacent 2D slice image;
- detecting, at the one or more central processing units (CPUs), an overlap pattern for a second 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample and a second adjacent 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images that is overlapping the second 2D slice image, wherein the overlap pattern is based on mutual information shared by the second 2D slice image and the second adjacent 2D slice image;
- based on the overlap pattern, determining a set of overlap distances for the set of 2D slice images of the porous media sample;
- registering, based on at least the set of overlap distances:
- a first 2D composite image comprising the first 2D slice image and the first adjacent 2D slice image;
- a second 2D composite image comprising the second 2D slice image and the second adjacent 2D slice image;
- and
- stacking the first 2D composite image and the second 2D composite image to form a 3D composite image;
- receiving at one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) from the one or more CPUs the 3D composite image based at least in part on a set of overlap distances for the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- determining pixel values for each pixel of the 3D composite image;
- and
- based on the pixel values, generating a blended 3D image corresponding to the set of 2D slice images of the porous media sample.
An apparatus for predicting dynamic two-phase fluid flow in a water-wet porous medium comprising a memory and one or more processors configured to cause the apparatus to:
- scan one or more 2D slice images to form a set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- detect an overlap pattern for a 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample and each adjacent 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images that is overlapping the 2D slice image, wherein the overlap pattern is based on mutual information shared by the 2D slice image and each adjacent 2D slice image;
- based on the overlap pattern, determine a set of overlap distances for the set of 2D slice images of the porous media sample;
- register, based on at least the set of overlap distances, a 2D composite image comprising the 2D slice image and the adjacent 2D slice image;
- receive, from one or more CPUs, the 2D composite image based at least in part on a set of overlap distances for a set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- determine pixel values for each pixel of the 2D composite image;
- and
- based on the pixel values, generate a 2D blended image corresponding to the set of 2D slice images of the porous media sample.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium for pore network generation comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause one or more processing units to:
- Scan one or more 2D slice images to form a set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- detect, at one or more central processing units (CPUs), an overlap pattern for a first slice image of the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample and a first adjacent 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images that is overlapping the first 2D slice image wherein the overlap pattern is based on mutual information shared by the first 2D slice image and the first adjacent 2D slice image;
- detect, at the one or more central processing units (CPUs), an overlap pattern for a second 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample and a second adjacent 2D slice image of the set of 2D slice images that is overlapping the second 2D slice image, wherein the overlap pattern is based on mutual information shared by the second 2D slice image and the second adjacent 2D slice image;
- based on the overlap pattern, determine a set of overlap distances for the set of 2D slice images of the porous media sample;
- and
- register, based on at least the set of overlap distances:
- a first 2D composite image comprising the first 2D slice image and the first adjacent 2D slice image;
- a second 2D composite image comprising the second 2D slice image and the second adjacent 2D slice image;
- and
- stacking the first 2D composite image and the second 2D composite image to form a 3D composite image;
- receive, at one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) from one or more CPUs, the 3D composite image based at least in part on a set of overlap distances for the set of 2D slice images of a porous media sample;
- determine pixel values for each pixel of the 3D composite image;
- and
