Abstract
[Problem] To provide an optical fiber assembly that does not reduce connection loss even when an optical connector is mounted on a substrate and reflow soldering is performed thereon. [Solution] An optical fiber assembly according to the present invention has: a plate-like ferrule 100 that is formed from a ceramic plate and that has an optical fiber insertion hole 103 and a guide hole 102 for insertion of a guide pin; and an optical fiber 11 inserted into the optical fiber insertion hole 103 of the ferrule 100. The optical fiber 11 is firmly fixed to the optical fiber insertion hole 103 of the ferrule 100 by means of an adhesive filled in the optical fiber insertion hole 103.

An optical fiber assembly, comprising:
- a plate-like ferrule that is formed of ceramics, and has optical fiber insertion holes and guide holes for insertion of a guide pin;
- and
- optical fibers inserted into the optical fiber insertion holes of the ferrule,
- wherein the ceramics has a hardness lower than a hardness of the optical fiber,
- the optical fiber assembly has a connection end face at which the optical fibers are fixed to the optical fiber insertion holes of the ferrule with an adhesive filled in the optical fiber insertion holes,
- the optical fibers and the ferrule at the connection end face are polished surfaces, and
- at the polished surfaces, distal ends of the optical fibers protrude to have convex shapes, which allows physical contact connection when optically connected, in which the convex shapes of the optical fibers come into contact with each other and are deformed.
A plate-like ferrule comprising:
- a plurality of optical fiber insertion holes;
- guide holes for insertion of a guide pin;
- a connection end face;
- and an optical fiber insertion end face,
- wherein the optical fiber insertion holes and the guide holes penetrate between the connection end face and the optical fiber insertion end face,
- the ferrule is formed of ceramics having a hardness of no more than 8.0 GPa,
- the ferrule includes a thin portion where a plate main body formed to have the optical fiber insertion holes has a small thickness, and a thick portion, and
- guide grooves that communicates with the optical fiber insertion holes are formed in an upper end face of the thick portion, the upper end face contacting with the thin portion.
A ferrule in an optical fiber assembly in which distal ends of optical fibers protrude from a polished surface at a connection end face of the ferrule to enable physical contact connection,
- wherein the ferrule is a plate made of ceramics,
- the ferrule has:
- a plurality of optical fiber insertion holes;
- and guide holes for guide pin insertion, and
- the ferrule has a hardness of no more than 8.0 GPa, which is lower than a hardness of the optical fibers to be inserted in the optical fiber insertion holes.
An optical connector comprising:
- a plate-like ferrule that is formed of ceramics, and has optical fiber insertion holes and guide holes for insertion of a guide pin;
- optical fibers inserted into the optical fiber insertion holes of the ferrule;
- and
- a jig for fixing the ferrule and forming a shape of a MT ferrule,
- wherein the ceramics has a hardness lower than a hardness of the optical fiber,
- the optical connector has a connection end face at which the optical fibers are fixed to the optical fiber insertion holes of the ferrule with an adhesive filled in the optical fiber insertion holes,
- the optical fibers and the ferrule at the are polished surfaces, and
- at the polished surfaces, distal ends of the optical fibers protrude to have convex shapes, which allows physical contact connection when optically connected, in which the convex shapes of the optical fibers come into contact with each other and are deformed.
A method for manufacturing an optical fiber assembly, using a plate main body made of ceramics and optical fibers having a hardness harder than the plate main body, the method comprising:
- an applying step of applying an adhesive to an insertion surface of the plate main body;
- an inserting step of inserting the optical fibers in optical fiber insertion holes provided to the plate main body from a side of the insertion surface, and extruding the adhesive at the side of the insertion surface toward a side of a connection end surface;
- an adhesive adjusting step of orienting distal ends of the inserted optical fibers upward to allow the adhesive adhering the optical fibers to be returned to a side of the optical fiber insertion holes;
- a curing step of curing the adhesive adjusted in the adhesive adjusting step;
- and
- a polishing step of optically polishing the side of the connection end surface of the plate main body to allow physical contact connection.
