Optimizing energy production by a wind turbine having shadow energy generator

A wind turbine having shadow energy generator, the wind turbine having a memory having computer readable instructions and a processing device for executing the computer readable instructions, the computer readable instructions controlling the processing device to perform operations that include

• obtaining a geographic location of the wind turbine;
• obtaining a weather forecast for the geographic location;
• calculating an estimated wind energy production for each of a plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on the weather forecast;
• calculating an estimated shadow energy generator energy production for each of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on the weather forecast;
• identifying one of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on a combination of the estimated wind energy production and the estimated shadow energy generator energy production;
• reconfiguring the wind turbine into the one of the plurality of configurations;
• identifying a current configuration of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine;
• and
• calculating an energy cost to transition the wind turbine from the current configuration to each of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine,
• wherein the one of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine is identified as the configuration with a highest value calculated by adding the estimated wind energy production and the estimated shadow energy generator energy production and subtracting the energy cost to transition the wind turbine from the configuration.

A computer program product comprising a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

• obtaining a geographic location of a wind turbine;
• obtaining a weather forecast for the geographic location;
• calculating an estimated wind energy production for each of a plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on the weather forecast;
• calculating an estimated shadow energy generator energy production for each of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on the weather forecast;
• identifying one of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine based on a combination of the estimated wind energy production and the estimated shadow energy generator energy production;
• reconfiguring the wind turbine into the one of the plurality of configurations;
• identifying a current configuration of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine;
• and
• calculating an energy cost to transition the wind turbine from the current configuration to each of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine,
• wherein the one of the plurality of configurations of the wind turbine is identified as the configuration with a highest value calculated by adding the estimated wind energy production and the estimated shadow energy generator energy production and subtracting the energy cost to transition the wind turbine from the configuration.
