Abstract
Methods and systems for determining formation properties in subsurface operations include drilling into a formation with a disintegrating device disposed on a downhole string, monitoring dynamics information signals in the downhole string with a dynamics information sensor to obtain dynamics information data, applying a transfer function to the dynamics information data to obtain a dynamics information signature, and analyzing the dynamics information signature to determine a formation property of the formation drilled by the disintegrating device.
Claims20
A method for determining earth formation properties during a subsurface operation, the method comprising:
- disposing a downhole string into a borehole in an earth formation;
- drilling into the earth formation with a disintegrating device disposed on the downhole string, the drilling causing vibrations of the downhole string;
- detecting, using a dynamics information sensor, the vibrations of the downhole string to provide dynamics information signals;
- monitoring, at a processing unit, the dynamics information signals to obtain dynamics information data;
- performing, using the processing unit, a mathematical calculation by applying a transfer function to the dynamics information data to calculate a dynamics information signature, wherein the transfer function relates a force at the disintegrating device and an amplitude of the dynamics information data;
- analyzing, using the processing unit, the calculated dynamics information signature to determine an earth formation property of the earth formation drilled by the disintegrating device;
- and
- steering the disintegrating device, using the processing unit, in response to the determined earth formation property.
The method of 1, further comprising using the determined formation property to adapt at least one of a drilling control and a drilling command.
A system for determining earth formation properties in a subsurface operation, the system comprising:
- a disintegrating device disposed on a downhole string and configured to drill into an earth formation, the downhole string vibrating while drilling into the earth formation;
- a dynamics information sensor arranged on the downhole string and configured to obtain dynamics information signals induced in the downhole string due to the vibration of the downhole string;
- a processing unit arranged on the drilling system and configured to:
- receive the dynamics information signals from the dynamics information sensor and provide dynamics information data;
- perform a mathematical calculation by applying a transfer function to the dynamics information data to obtain a dynamics information signature, wherein the transfer function relates a force at the disintegrating device and an amplitude of the dynamics information data;
- analyze the obtained dynamics information signature to determine an earth formation property of the earth formation drilled by the disintegrating device;
- and
- steer the disintegrating device in response to the determined formation property.
