Abstract
A device for manipulating microdroplets comprises a microfluidic chip adapted to receive and manipulate microdroplets dispersed in a carrier fluid flowing along pathways therethrough characterised in that chip includes regions of differing or zero microdroplet fluid flow rates. Also disclosed is an electrowetting means of transporting emulsions and components of emulsions between the different flow regions.
Claims13
A device for manipulating microdroplets comprising a microfluidic chip adapted to receive and manipulate microdroplets dispersed in a carrier fluid, the device comprising:
- a flow channel adapted to receive microdroplets dispersed in a flowing carrier fluid, and a holding zone in which the microdroplets are held in a stationary position by an optically mediated electrowetting force within a flowing stream of the carrier fluid;
- wherein the flow channel is provided with a pathway of optoelectrowetting on dielectric (OEWOD) virtual electrodes to enable manipulation of microdroplets by selective displacement into the holding zone;
- and wherein the stream of carrier fluid contains dissolved within gases, nutrients, biomolecules or other chemical reagents.
