Closed system catheter

A closed system catheter assembly, comprising:

• a catheter hub having a distal end and an open proximal end, an internal passage defined by a wall extending between the distal and proximal ends, a catheter extending distally from the distal end, a side port to the internal passage, and an extension tube connected to the side port to establish a fluid path between the internal passage and the extension tube;
• a needleless connector having a housing including one end connected to the extension tube and a connector end;
• and
• a vent cap adapted to operably couple to the needleless connector, the vent cap shiftable relative to the needleless connector between a storage position and a venting position, the vent cap including
• a nose defined by a wall between a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end proximal to the connector end of the needleless connector when the vent cap is coupled to the needleless connector in the storage position, the nose adapted to be inserted at least partially into the housing of the needleless connector when the vent cap is in the venting position;
• a push plate having a flange configured to provide a surface area for a clinician to push on includes an opening operably coupled to the proximal end of the nose;
• and
• one or more resilient needleless connector engagement arms operably coupled to the nose and configured to grip a portion of the housing of the needleless connector to enable the vent cap to move from the storage position to the venting position when the plate is being actively depressed.
