Provided herein are methods of purifying liposomal formulations by washing with acidic aqueous solutions.

Dependent claims

A method of purifying a crude liposome composition, the liposome comprising:

(a) a lipid bilayer;
(b) an internal medium;
and
(c) a first fraction of a therapeutic agent encapsulated in the internal medium of the liposome, wherein the therapeutic agent has low water solubility and is protonatable to a protonated form, and wherein a second fraction of the therapeutic agent is entrained in the lipid bilayer;
wherein the method comprises:
washing the crude liposome composition with an acidified aqueous solution having a pH from 1 to 6.
