Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to methods of genetically detecting or generating a peanut line that is resistant to peanut smut infection. The disclosure also relates to cultivation of smut resistant peanut lines and the cessation or prevention of peanut smut in a given geographic area.
Claims12
A method of identifying a recombinant inbred peanut line that is resistant to peanut smut, comprising:
- obtaining a biological sample from at least one peanut in the recombinant inbred peanut line;
- performing whole genome sequencing on at least a portion of the biological sample to generate at least one target sequence;
- comparing the at least one target sequence to a peanut reference sequence, wherein the peanut reference sequence comprises SEQ ID NO. 4;
- and
- identifying the recombinant inbred peanut line as being resistant to peanut smut if the at least one target sequence is identical to the peanut reference sequence.
A method of producing a smut resistant peanut plant or a part thereof, comprising:
- crossing a peanut plant having a resistance gene associated with smut resistance with itself or a second peanut plant, wherein the resistance gene comprises a sequence identical to SEQ ID NO:
- 4;
- harvesting a resulting peanut seed;
- and
- growing the peanut seed to produce the smut resistant peanut plant or part thereof.
A method of treating or preventing peanut smut infestation in a geographic region in need thereof, comprising:
- producing a recombinant inbred line of smut resistant peanuts, wherein at least one peanut from the recombinant inbred line comprises a gene resistant to peanut smut and the gene resistant to peanut smut comprises a sequence having 100 percent identity to SEQ ID NO:
- 4;
- and
- cultivating the recombinant inbred line of smut-resistant peanuts in the geographic region.
