5GS policy for extended reality

An apparatus for a communication network, comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• at least one memory comprising instructions of a user plane function (UPF) for the communication network, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:
• receiving a quality of service (QoS) policy comprising rules for handling one or more packets of a QoS flow;
• receiving classification information for the one or more packets of the QoS flow, wherein respective classification information for a respective packet of the one or more packets indicates one or more Protocol Data Unit (PDU) set types that the respective packet belongs to;
• for each respective packet of the one or more packets:
• determining respective QoS information for the respective packet of the one or more packets based on the QoS policy and the classification information for the respective packet, wherein the respective QoS information comprises PDU set granularity QoS information indicating how the respective packet of the QoS flow is to be handled;
• and
• sending, to a radio access network (RAN) node, the respective QoS information for the respective packet.

A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising program instructions of a user plane function stored thereon which, when executed by at least one processor of an apparatus, cause the apparatus at least to perform:

• receiving a quality of service (QoS) policy comprising rules for handling one or more packets of a quality of service (QoS) flow;
• receiving classification information for the one or more packets of the QoS flow, wherein respective classification information for a respective packet of the one or more packets indicates one or more Protocol Data Unit (PDU) set types that the respective packet belongs to;
• for each respective packet of the one or more packets:
• determining respective QoS information for the respective packet based on the QoS policy and the classification information for the respective packet, wherein the respective QoS information comprises PDU set granularity QoS information indicating how the respective packet is to be handled;
• and
• sending, to a radio access network (RAN) node, the respective QoS information for the respective packet.
