A hardened cover that is at least partially transparent to enable viewing of an emergency exit sign may be disposed over the emergency exit sign to prevent access thereto. The cover may be formed of one and more components that surround or at least partially cover the emergency exit sign. The cover may be sufficiently thick and be formed of an anti-shatter material so to prevent breakage thereof, even in the event of being struck by strong objects, such as pipes, bats, and the like. For example, the material of the cover may be formed of ballistic-grade glass material, such as laminated polycarbonate, glass-clad polycarbonate, monolithic acrylic, and so on. The ballistic-grade materials often have adhesive inter-layers, such as polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), or otherwise, that are used to bond other layers.
