Abstract
Methods of making and using a bougie having a body with a first insertion depth indicator spaced a first distance from a first end of the body and configured to indicate a first predetermined insertion depth range, and a second insertion depth indicator spaced a second distance from a second end of the body and configured to indicate a second predetermined insertion depth range that is different from the first predetermined insertion depth range are described. To use the bougie, a user determines whether or not the first or second predetermined insertion depth range is appropriate for the patient, and then inserts the appropriate one of the first end or the second end of the body into the mouth of the patient.
Claims11
A method, comprising:
- inserting a laryngoscope into the mouth of a patient to visualize a vocal cord of the patient;
- obtaining a bougie having a body with a first insertion depth indicator spaced at a first predetermined insertion depth range from a first end, the first predetermined insertion depth indicator being indicative of a first distance from the mouth of a first subset of patients within a group of possible patients to an area within the trachea of the first subset of patients, and a second insertion depth indicator spaced at a second predetermined insertion depth range from a second end of the body that is different from the first predetermined insertion depth range, the second predetermined insertion depth indicator being indicative of a second distance from the mouth of a second subset of patients within the group of possible patients to the area within the trachea of the second subset of patients;
- determining whether the first predetermined insertion depth range or the second predetermined insertion depth range is appropriate for the patient;
- wherein the method is further performed by performing at least one of the following actions:
- inserting the first end of the body into the mouth of the patient responsive to a determination that the first predetermined insertion depth range is appropriate for the particular patient;
- inserting the second end of the body into the mouth of the patient responsive to a determination that the second predetermined insertion depth range is appropriate for the particular patient;
- and
- removing the laryngoscope from the mouth of the patient.
A method of making a bougie, comprising:
- forming a first insertion depth range indicator on a body of the bougie, the body of the bougie having a first end and a second end and at least one surface extending between the first and second ends, the first and second end each being configured to be inserted into the mouth and trachea of a patient, the body having an elongated shape that is sized and dimensioned to pass through a mouth and into a trachea of a patient, the body being constructed of a flexible and non-immunogenic material, wherein the first insertion depth range indicator is formed on the body and spaced at a first predetermined insertion depth range from the first end, the first predetermined insertion depth range indicator being indicative of a first distance from the mouth of a first subset of patients within a group of possible patients to an area within the trachea of the first subset of patients, such that in use the first end of the body is positioned the first predetermined insertion depth range past the mouth of the patient into the area within the trachea of the patient when the body is positioned into the mouth of the patient with the first insertion depth indicator;
- forming a second insertion depth range indicator on the body of the bougie which is different from the first insertion depth range indicator, the second insertion depth range indicator formed on the body and spaced at a second predetermined insertion depth range different from the first predetermined insertion depth range, the second predetermined insertion depth range indicator being indicative of a second distance from the mouth of a second subset of patients within the group of possible patients to the area within the trachea of the second subset of patients, such that in use the second end of the body is positioned the second predetermined insertion depth range past the mouth of the patient into the area within the trachea of the patient when the body is positioned into the mouth of the patient with the second insertion depth range indicator;
- and
- wherein the first insertion depth range and the first distance are based upon an analysis of the first subset of patients, and the second insertion depth range and second distance are based upon an analysis of the second subset of patients.
A method of making a bougie, comprising:
- forming a first insertion depth range indicator on a body of the bougie, and a second insertion depth range indicator on the body of the bougie which is different from the first insertion depth range indicator, the body having a first end, a second end, and at least one surface extending between the first and second ends, the first insertion depth range indicator spaced at a first predetermined insertion depth range from the first end, the first predetermined insertion depth range indicator being indicative of a first distance from a mouth of a first subset of patients within a group of possible patients to an area within the trachea of the first subset of patients, such that in use the first end of the body is positioned the first predetermined insertion depth range past the mouth of a patient into the area within the trachea of the patient when the body is positioned in the mouth of the patient with the first insertion depth range indicator, the second insertion depth range indicator spaced at a second predetermined insertion depth range from the second end, the second predetermined insertion depth range indicator being indicative of a second distance from the mouth of a second subset of patients within the group of possible patients to the area within the trachea of the second subset of patients, such that in use the second end of the body is positioned the second predetermined insertion depth range past the mouth of the patient into the area within the trachea of the patient when the body is positioned into the mouth of the patient with the second insertion depth range indicator;
- and
- wherein the first insertion depth range and the first distance are based upon an analysis of the first subset of patients, and the second insertion depth range and second distance are based upon an analysis of the second subset of patients.
