Abstract
Apparatuses and associated techniques for fall detection and prevention via wearable devices are provided. In one aspect, a wearable device is provided including one or more pressure sensors arranged on a bottom portion of the wearable device to collect pressure data from a bottom of a foot of a user, a wireless transmitter communicatively coupled with the one or more pressure sensors, and a power source coupled with the wireless transmitter.
Claims20
A smart sock, comprising:
- one or more pressure sensors arranged on a bottom portion of the smart sock to collect pressure data from a bottom of a foot of a user;
- a stretchable fabric pocket;
- a communication link connected to the one or more pressure sensors and terminating with one or more magnets within the stretchable fabric pocket;
- and a removable component detachably attached to the smart sock by insertion into the stretchable fabric pocket, the removable component comprising:
- a wireless transmitter communicatively coupled with the one or more pressure sensors;
- a power source coupled with the wireless transmitter;
- and a port that magnetically couples to the communication link within the fabric pocket when the removable component is inserted into the stretchable fabric pocket, wherein:
- the pressure data is processed using a machine learning model to predict a fall direction of a future fall for the user,
- and the predicted fall direction is used to predict a fall severity of the future fall.
A wearable device for a foot of a user, comprising:
- one or more pressure sensors arranged on a bottom portion of the wearable device to collect pressure data from a bottom of the foot of the user;
- stretchable fabric pocket;
- a communication link connected to the one or more pressure sensors and terminating with one or more magnets within the stretchable fabric pocket;
- and a removable component detachably attached to the wearable device by insertion into the stretchable fabric pocket, the removable component comprising:
- one or more ankle sensors;
- a wireless transmitter communicatively coupled with the one or more pressure sensors and the one or more ankle sensors;
- a power source coupled with the wireless transmitter;
- and a port that magnetically couples to the communication link within the fabric pocket when the removable component is inserted into the stretchable fabric pocket,
- wherein:
- the pressure data is processed using a machine learning model to predict a fall direction of a future fall for the user,
- and the predicted fall direction is used to predict a fall severity of the future fall.
A method comprising:
- receiving, from a wearable device on a foot of a user, pressure data for a bottom of the foot of the user;
- receiving, from the wearable device, ankle sensor data from one or more ankle sensors arranged on an ankle portion of the wearable device, wherein:
- the wearable device comprises:
- a stretchable fabric pocket;
- a communication link connected to one or more pressure sensors for the bottom of the foot of the user and terminating with one or more magnets within the stretchable fabric pocket;
- and
- a removable component detachably attached to the wearable device by insertion into the stretchable fabric pocket, the removable component comprising a port that magnetically couples to the communication link within the fabric pocket when the removable component is inserted into the stretchable fabric pocket;
- predicting a future fall of the user based on the pressure data and the ankle sensor data, comprising:
- processing the pressure data and the ankle sensor data using a first machine learning model to predict a fall direction of the predicted future fall;
- and predicting a fall severity of the future fall based on the fall direction;
- and
- initiating one or more interventions based on the future fall.
