Abstract
At least one exemplary embodiment is directed to a method of determining hearing loss using audio cues whose spectrum is orthogonal to each other to identify a wearer's hearing loss, and using the information to adjust audio to normal listening levels.
Claims20
A method for utilizing a vocalization of a user, comprising:
- performing a hearing test for a user by sending a signal to a speaker that plays words to the user, the words including a first word and a second word whose spectrums are orthogonal to one another for the hearing test, wherein the hearing test asks the user to indicate what words the user hears;
- receiving an ear canal pick-up signal from an ear canal microphone of an earphone device, wherein the ear canal microphone detects a first voice;
- receiving an ambient sound pick-up signal from an ambient sound microphone of the earphone device, wherein the ambient sound microphone detects the first voice and another voice or noise in an acoustic environment;
- determining a vocalization of the user in the acoustic environment by separating the first voice from the other voice or noise based on comparing the ear canal pick-up signal with the ambient sound pick-up signal;
- and
- sending the vocalization to an application that utilizes the vocalization as input to the hearing test to indicate what words the user heard.

A device, comprising:
- an ear canal microphone;
- an ambient sound microphone;
- a speaker;
- a memory;
- and
- a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory to:
- perform a hearing test for a user by sending a signal to the speaker that plays words to the user, the words including a first word and a second word whose spectrums are orthogonal to one another for the hearing test, wherein the hearing test asks the user to indicate what words the user hears;
- receive an ear canal pick-up signal from the ear canal microphone, wherein the ear canal microphone detects a user's voice;
- receive an ambient sound pick-up signal from the ambient sound microphone, wherein the ambient sound microphone detects the user's voice and another voice or noise in an acoustic environment;
- determine a vocalization of the user in the acoustic environment by separating the user's voice from the other voice or noise based on comparing the ear canal pick-up signal with the ambient sound pick-up signal;
- and
- send the vocalization to an application that utilizes the vocalization as input to the hearing test to indicate what words the user heard.
9 more elements
A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
- performing a hearing test for a user by sending a signal to a speaker that plays words to the user, the words including a first word and a second word whose spectrums are orthogonal to one another for the hearing test, wherein the hearing test asks the user to indicate what words the user hears;
- receiving an ear canal pick-up signal from an ear canal microphone of an earphone device, wherein the ear canal microphone detects a user's voice;
- receiving an ambient sound pick-up signal from an ambient sound microphone of the earphone device, wherein the ambient sound microphone detects the user's voice and another voice or noise in an acoustic environment;
- determining a vocalization of the user in the acoustic environment by separating the user's voice from the other voice or noise based on comparing the ear canal pick-up signal with the ambient sound pick-up signal;
- and
- sending the vocalization to an application that utilizes the vocalization as input to the hearing test to indicate what words the user heard.
