Method and apparatus for operating radar for radio frequency exposure management

A method for radio frequency (RF) exposure management, the method comprising:

• selecting, based at least in part on a set of information that includes non-radar sensing information from a non-radar information source, a maximum permissible exposure (MPE) mode corresponding to a determination whether to operate a radar to generate a current radar-sensing result for object detection for the RF exposure level management, wherein the selected MPE mode is selected from among a first MPE mode and a second MPE mode, and the selected MPE mode controls an ON or OFF state of the radar based on the determination whether to operate the radar for RF exposure level management, wherein a selection of the first MPE mode corresponds to a determination to operate and use the radar for the RF exposure level management;
• when the first MPE mode is selected:
• controlling the radar to be in the ON state;
• transmitting radar signals and generating a current radar-sensing result for object detection based on the transmitted radar signals;
• identifying available power for communication signals based on an identified RF exposure level of an object detected by the radar signals and the current radar-sensing result;
• and
• transmitting the communication signals for wireless communication at a power level that does not exceed the available power when the first MPE mode is selected;
• and
• when the second MPE mode is selected, controlling the radar to be in the OFF state and transmitting the communication signals for wireless communication at a power level that is based on a predefined scenario corresponding to a body part being within a proximity to an electronic device.

A non-transitory computer readable medium embodying a computer program, the computer program comprising computer readable program code that, when executed by a processor of an electronic device, causes the processor to:

• perform radio frequency (RF) exposure level management due to RF transmission from the electronic device, wherein to perform the RF exposure level management further the computer program comprises code that causes the processor to:
• select, based at least in part on a set of information that includes non-radar sensing information from a non-radar information source, a maximum permissible exposure (MPE) mode corresponding to a determination whether to operate a radar to generate a current radar-sensing result for object detection for the RF exposure level management, wherein an ON or OFF state of the radar is controlled based on the determination whether to use radar for RF exposure level management, wherein:
• the selected MPE mode is selected from among a first MPE mode and a second MPE mode, and the selected MPE mode controls an ON or OFF state of the radar based on the determination whether to operate the radar for RF exposure level management,
• a selection of the first MPE mode corresponds to a determination to operate and use the radar for the RF exposure level management, and
• a selection of the second MPE mode corresponds to a determination to not operate and not use the radar for the RF exposure level management;
• when the second MPE mode is selected, control the radar to be in the OFF state;
• when the first MPE mode is selected:
• control the radar to be in the ON state:
• transmit radar signals for object detection and generate the current-radar sensing result based on the transmitted radar signals;
• and
• identify available power for communication signals based on an identified RF exposure level of an object detected by the radar signals;
• and
• transmit the communication signals for wireless communication at a power level that:
• (i) does not exceed the available power when the first MPE mode is selected or
• (ii) is based on a predefined scenario corresponding to a body part being within a proximity to the electronic device, in response to the selection of the second MPE mode which corresponds to the determination to not operate the radar for the RF exposure level management.
