Abstract
A diol composition includes 1) 95% by weight or more of a diol, the diol being selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 2,3-butanediol, and 2) impurities derived from biomass in an amount sufficient to cause the diol composition to have an electrical conductivity of 0.6 to 30 mS/m as determined by measuring electrical conductivity as an aqueous diol composition solution at 23° C. with a diol composition concentration of 16.67% and multiplying the measure conductivity by 6.
Claims9
A method of producing a diol composition comprising:
- obtaining a biomass-resource derived diol composition comprising the biomass-resource derived diol and biomass-resource derived impurities by a chemical reaction of a biomass-resource derived intermediate product or by culturing a microorganism;
- polishing the biomass-resource derived diol composition by nanofiltration, ion-exchanging and/or distillation to control an amount of biomass-resource derived impurities and to adjust an electrical conductivity of 0.6 to 30 mS/m, and
- adding organic acids, amino acids, amines, ammonia or carbon dioxide to the polished biomass-resource derived diol composition to adjust the electrical conductivity of 0.6 to 30 mS/m in case that the electrical conductivity of the polished biomass-resource derived diol composition is less than 0.6 mS/m;
- wherein the diol composition comprises 95% by weight or more of a biomass-resource derived diol, the diol being selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 2,3-butanediol, and
- wherein the electrical conductivity of the diol composition is determined by measuring electrical conductivity as an aqueous diol composition solution at 23° C. with a diol composition concentration of 16.67% and multiplying the measured conductivity by 6 is 0.6 to 30 mS/m.
