Abstract
Present embodiments relate to ionization of air flow within heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. More specifically, but without limitation, present embodiments relate to ionization systems, for example bipolar ionization, which are controlled in part by a signal from or powered by the blower motor controller of the HVAC system so that the ionization system functions when the blower is on.
Claims15
An ion generator, comprising:
- a housing assembly having a first housing and a second housing, said housing assembly configured to be mounted on an exterior of a blower of a mobile HVAC, said first housing and said second housing each having an interior volume;
- a first wire extending from said housing assembly and a second wire extending from said housing assembly;
- a circuit board in one of the first housing or the second housing, said circuit board receiving a high voltage AC and converting to a lower voltage DC;
- a potted ion generator module in the other of the first housing or the second housing to create ions and in electrical communication with said first wire and said second wire;
- a first end of a first grommet receiving said first wire and a first end of a second grommet receiving said second wire;
- a first emitter at an end of said first wire and a second emitter at an end of said second wire, each of said ends having a brush, said first emitter extending from a second end of said first grommet and said second emitter extending from a second end of said second grommet, wherein said first grommet and said second grommet are spaced away from said housing assembly;
- and,
- further comprising a quick-disconnect connector which extends from the housing assembly, said quick-disconnect connector capable of receiving power from a blower motor controller of said mobile HVAC so that said ion generator operates when one of a blower motor or said blower motor controller is operating.

An ion generator, comprising:
- a housing assembly comprising a first housing, a second housing, a bottom, and at least one cover, said housing assembly positioned on an exterior of an HVAC blower housing or a duct, or remotely from said blower housing;
- an ion generator module and a circuit board potted within said housing assembly, so that said ion generator and said circuit board are self-contained within said housing assembly;
- first and second wires extending from said housing assembly, a first end of said first and second wires coupled to said ion generator;
- a first grommet and a second grommet, a first end of said first grommet receiving said first wire, and a first end of said second grommet receiving said second wire;
- a second end of said first and second wires each comprising a pin or a brush to emit ions, said pin or brush of said first wire and said second wire extending from said second ends of said grommets, respectively;
- said grommets and said pin or brush spaced from said housing assembly and passing through an external surface of said blower housing or said duct;
- a quick-disconnect connector on an exterior of said housing assembly and capable of providing power to said circuit board within said housing assembly from a blower motor or blower motor controller.
