Abstract
Devices and methods establish and facilitate retrograde or reverse flow blood circulation in the region of the carotid artery bifurcation in order to limit or prevent the release of emboli into the cerebral vasculature such as into the internal carotid artery. The methods are particularly useful for interventional procedures performed through a transcervical approach or transfemoral into the common carotid artery.
Claims7
A device for use in accessing and treating a carotid artery, said device comprising:
- an arterial access sheath having a distal section with a distal end adapted to be introduced into the carotid artery, a proximal end, and a lumen extending between the distal and proximal ends;
- a fluid flow shunt fluidly coupled to the arterial access and configured to receive blood flow from the sheath, the shunt attached to a single housing wherein the single housing contains only a blood filter and a one-way check valve positioned immediately downstream of the blood filter within the single housing:
- and
- a stopper member disposed along an outer surface of the arterial access sheath, the stopper member has a pre-shaped configuration that includes a first bend and a second bend;
- wherein the first bend and the second bend are arranged to orient an angle of insertion of the arterial access sheath and are configured for orienting the insertion of the arterial access into the carotid artery;
- wherein the stopper member has a stiffness greater than the arterial access sheath such that when the stopper member is disposed along the arterial access sheath, the arterial access sheath is shifted to a bent configuration corresponding to the pre-shaped configuration of the stopper member;
- and
- wherein the stopper member limits insertion of the sheath into the carotid artery to no more than a portion of the length of a distal-most portion of the distal sheath.
A device for use in accessing and treating a carotid artery, said device comprising:
- an arterial access sheath having a distal section with a distal end adapted to be introduced into the carotid artery, a proximal end, and a lumen extending between the distal and proximal ends;
- a fluid flow shunt fluidly coupled to the arterial access and configured to receive blood flow from the arterial access sheath, the shunt attached to a single housing wherein the single housing contains only a blood filter and a one-way check valve positioned immediately downstream of the blood filter within the single housing;
- a stopper member;
- wherein the stopper member is configured to remain outside the skin of a patient;
- wherein the stopper member has a pre-formed shape having a first pre-formed bend and a second pre-formed bend, wherein the stopper member is configured to be positioned over at least a portion of the distal section of the arterial access sheath along an outer surface of the arterial access sheath;
- wherein the stopper member is configured to bias the arterial access sheath into a bent configuration corresponding to the pre-shaped shape of the stopper member when positioned over the arterial access sheath;
- and
- wherein, when the stopper member is positioned over the arterial access sheath, the stopper member limits insertion of the arterial access sheath into the carotid artery to no more than a portion of the length of a distal-most portion of the arterial access sheath.
