Abstract
Systems and methods herein generally relate to prolonging viability of bodily tissue, especially an organ, by adjusting pressure as needed to maintain a constant pressure within the organ even during external pressure fluctuations due, for example, to transportation of the organ in an airplane. The systems and methods herein can include an electronic pump that pumps gas into an organ and a mechanical pressure regulator to release gas based on organ pressure.
Claims20
A system for maintaining organ pressure, the system comprising:
- an organ adapter configured to seal with a lumen of an organ;
- a manifold in fluid communication with the organ adapter, the manifold configured to receive gas from a gas source;
- and
- a pressure regulator in fluid communication with the manifold, the pressure regulator configured to release gas from the manifold at a gas release rate based on changes in environmental pressure,
- wherein the manifold and the pressure regulator are configured to maintain a gas pressure within the organ in a desired range when the manifold receives gas at a substantially constant rate and the environmental pressure is above or below the desired range.
A method for maintaining organ pressure, the method comprising:
- preserving an organ in an organ transport container comprising an organ adapter, a pressure regulator, and a manifold, wherein the manifold is in fluid communication with the pressure regulator and the organ adapter,
- wherein the organ adapter is sealed with a lumen of the organ,
- wherein the manifold is configured to receive gas from a gas source;
- via the pressure regulator, releasing gas from the manifold at a gas release rate based on changes in environmental pressure to maintain a gas pressure within the organ in a desired range when the manifold receives gas at a substantially constant rate and the environmental pressure is above or below the desired range.
