Signaling of number of merge candidates

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform a method of encoding a video bitstream comprising:

• determining a maximum number of geometric merge mode merge candidates;
• generating maximum number of geometric merge mode candidates information based on a relation between the maximum number of geometric merge mode merge candidates and a maximum number of merge candidates;
• generating the video bitstream including coding information for a current picture, the coding information including the maximum number of geometric merge mode candidates information and indicating that a geometric merge mode is enabled for a coding level higher than a picture level of the current picture and the maximum number of merge candidates satisfies a condition;
• and
• transmitting the video bitstream, wherein
• the maximum number of geometric merge mode merge candidates is equal to the maximum number of merge candidates minus a value indicated by the maximum number of geometric merge mode candidates information.
