A process for manufacturing core-shell hierarchical nanocomposites consisting of core carrier nanoparticles wrapped by a shell of layered materials, said process which comprises subjecting a mixture consisting of one or more of the layered materials and carrier particles to a mechanical exfoliation step, wherein said mechanical exfoliation step comprises milling said mixture, and wherein said mechanical exfoliation step is carried out in a grinding system comprising a closed vessel and mobile grinding objects which are made of one or more of steel, agate, zirconia and tungsten carbide;
- wherein said milling is performed at a speed from 500 rpm to 700 rpm, wherein said layered materials are selected from graphene, graphene oxide, graphene nitride, and graphene functionalized with —COOH and/or —OH groups in the form of nanoplatelets, and said carrier nanoparticles are selected from:
- (i) oxoclusters;
- (ii) metal particles;
- (iii) carbide particles;
- or
- (iv) nitride particles.
