Abstract
A liner in a label-liner combination is provided with a die cut portion made in the liner. The die cut portion is aligned with at least one edge in a label and a front side of the liner is attached to a backside of the label. The die cut portion of the liner is adapted to be removed from the liner when the label is removed from the label-liner combination. Dimensions, and orientation, and a location of the die cut portion in the liner are adapted to allow the label to be removed from the label-liner combination and applied to a surface by digits of a hand without touching an adhesive coating on the backside of the label and adapted to maintain proper printer waste liner spool operations when the liner is wound after application of the label.
Claims16
A label-liner combination, comprising:
- a liner;
- a label;
- a non-adhesive component defined by a liner die cut made in the liner, wherein the non-adhesive component is aligned adjacent to at least one edge of the label;
- wherein the non-adhesive component remains attached to a backside portion of a backside of the label when the label is separated from the liner leaving a hole in a remaining liner, wherein the remaining liner retains unbroken sides with the hole adjacent to at least one unbroken side of remaining liner, and wherein a size of the hole left within the remaining liner and a location of the hole within the remaining liner prevent a feed mechanism of a printer that winds the remaining liner from malfunctioning, wherein the location of the hole within the remaining liner is adjacent to the feed mechanism of the printer and along an infeed path of the feed mechanism;
- and
- sizing the non-adhesive component such that a first area of the non-adhesive component overlaps with the backside of the label and a second area of the non-adhesive component extends beyond at least one edge of the label so as to project past that edge without contact with the backside of the label, the second area being sufficient to allow digits of a hand to grasp the non-adhesive component and peel the non-adhesive component away from the label after the label is applied to an object without the digits contacting an adhesive coating on the backside of the label;
- positioning the liner die cut adjacent and proximate to an edge of the liner so as to define a liner margin between the liner die cut and the edge of the liner that is sufficient to maintain structural integrity of the remaining liner after the non-adhesive component is removed with the label;
- wherein the non-adhesive component provides an adhesive-free region on the label for handling.
A roll of label-liner combinations, comprising:
- a liner web;
- labels defined within a label web, wherein the label web is affixed to a front side the liner web;
- wherein each label of the label web is aligned over at least a portion of a corresponding die cut within the liner web, offset from sides of the liner web, and joined together to define a given label-liner combination within the roll;
- wherein corresponding die cut of each given label-liner combination is adapted to provide a non-adhesive component by which a corresponding label can be separated from the liner web with a corresponding portion of the liner web remaining affixed to a backside of the corresponding label to provide a user access to separate the corresponding label from the liner web without encountering any adhesive that is coated on a backside of the corresponding label;
- orienting each die cut within the liner web such that the die cut is placed on an end of the liner web that is closest to a feed path of a printer that uses the roll, so that a hole left in the liner web after the non-adhesive component is removed with the corresponding label is nearest to a feed mechanism of the printer that winds a used portion of the liner web, and so that the used portion of the liner web remains engaged with the feed mechanism without causing printer malfunction;
- sizing each die cut such that the corresponding non-adhesive component extends beyond at least one edge of the corresponding label by a distance sufficient to allow digits of a hand to grasp the non-adhesive component and separate the corresponding label from the liner web without the digits contacting the adhesive coated on the backside of the corresponding label;
- wherein a frontside of the label web comprises a thermally activated print coating;
- and
- wherein the roll comprises a plurality of label-liner combinations having a single liner substrate and a plurality of individually imaged labels, each label-liner combination comprises a corresponding label and corresponding die cuts for a corresponding removable liner portion;
- wherein the non-adhesive component provides a handling feature for separating each label and applying each label to a corresponding object.
A label-liner combination, comprising:
- a liner;
- a label affixed to the liner, wherein the label is offset relative to sides of the liner and aligned over the liner to form the label-liner combination;
- wherein the liner includes a die cut made within the liner that corresponds to a non-adhesive component by which the label can be separated from the liner with a portion of the liner that corresponds to the die cut remaining affixed to a backside of the label;
- offsetting the label on the liner such that a first offset between a first side of the label and a first side of the liner is greater than a second offset between a second side of the label and a second side of the liner, and locating the die cut on the first side of the label and the first side of the liner, so that the greater first offset defines a liner margin on the first side that is wider than the liner margin on the second side, the wider liner margin maintaining structural integrity and alignment of a waste liner when a printer winds the waste liner after the non-adhesive component is removed with the label;
- dimensioning the die cut such that the non-adhesive component extends beyond a bottom edge of the label for a first distance and extends beyond a side edge of the label for a second distance, wherein the first distance is greater than the second distance, and wherein the liner is approximately 4.375 inches by 2.25 inches and the label is approximately 4 inches by 2 inches;
- and
- wherein the non-adhesive component provides a handling and non-adhesive component for separating the label and applying the label to a surface.
