Abstract
The disclosure relates to a data reading system and related methods of operation designed for optimizing and efficiently handling various image-processing functionalities of a data reading system. The data reading system includes a data reader configurable in at least a first image-processing mode for reading and decoding optical codes from acquired image data and in a second image-processing mode for performing image analysis to identify the item. The image-processing modes may be selectively or automatically toggled as needed for completing a transaction.
Claims19
A data reading system comprising:
- a housing having a read region;
- one or more data readers supported by the housing, each data reader having a field-of-view directed to the read region, wherein each data reader is operable to capture image data of an item as the item passes across the read region of the housing, and wherein at least one of the one or more data readers is configurable with at least a first image-processing mode for reading an optical code and a second image-processing mode for processing color images for item identification;
- and
- a processor in communication with the at least one data reader, wherein the processor is operable to execute instructions and configure the at least one data reader in the first image-processing mode, wherein the at least one data reader is operable to decode optical codes from the image data, and the second image-processing mode, wherein the at least one data reader is operable to perform image analysis to identify the item from the image data,
- wherein the first image-processing mode and the second image-processing mode include different sets of image-processing parameters relative each other with respect to at least color correction, defective pixel correction, noise filtering, color gain, image compression, and/or black level compensation such that performance of reading the optical code is improved during the first image-processing mode and performance of item identification is improved during the second image processing mode.
A method of data reading via a data reading system, the method comprising:
- activating, via a processor, one or more data readers, wherein at least one of the one or more data readers is configurable with at least a first image-processing mode for reading an optical code and a second image-processing mode for processing color images for item identification;
- receiving, via the processor, input selecting one of the first image-processing mode or the second image-processing mode;
- configuring, via the processor, the at least one data reader with the selected one of the first image-processing mode or the second image-processing mode responsive to the input, wherein the first image-processing mode and the second image-processing mode include different sets of image-processing parameters relative each other with respect to at least color correction, defective pixel correction, noise filtering, color gain, image compression, and/or black level compensation such that performance of reading the optical code is improved during the first image-processing mode and performance of item identification is improved during the second image processing mode;
- and
- capturing, via the at least one data reader, image data of an item as the item passes across a read region of the data reading system,
- wherein:
- when the at least one data reader is in the first image-processing mode, the method further includes decoding, via the processor, an optical code from the image data, and
- when the at least one data reader is in the second image-processing mode, the method further includes analyzing, via the processor, the image data to identify the item.
