Display device for controlling multiple devices with one controller and method for operating the same

A display device, comprising:

• a display;
• a wireless communication circuit;
• an infrared (IR) signal transceiver;
• one or more processors comprising processing circuitry;
• and
• memory storing at least one program,
• wherein the at least one program, when executed by the one or more processors individually or collectively, causes the display device to:
• receive, from a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) connection device via the wireless communication circuit, content of an external source device connected to the HDMI connection device;
• receive, via at least one of the wireless communication circuit or the IR signal transceiver, a control command from a first controller while outputting the content using the display;
• identify an IR signal output device for the external source device;
• and
• based on identifying the IR signal transceiver as the IR signal output device for the external source device, change the control command to an IR signal for the external source device and transmit, via the IR signal transceiver, the IR signal comprising the control command.

A method of a display device, the method comprising:

• detecting, using a wireless communication circuit of the display device, a wireless connection to a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) connection device, the HDMI connection device being connected to an external source device;
• determining whether a first infrared (IR) signal is received, from the external source device through an IR signal transceiver of the display device, within a predetermined wait time;
• based on determining that the first IR signal has been received within the predetermined wait time, determining a first distance to the HDMI connection device based on a time difference between a first time point corresponding to the wireless connection to the HDMI connection device and a second time point corresponding to reception of the first IR signal;
• based on the first distance being within a determined IR signal arrival range, setting the IR signal transceiver as an IR signal output device for the external source device;
• based on the first distance and a network performance of the wireless communication circuit, determining whether a second IR signal output by the IR signal transceiver at least partially overlaps a third IR signal transmitted through the HDMI connection device;
• and
• based on determining that the second IR signal does not overlap the third IR signal, setting the HDMI connection device as the IR signal output device for the external source device.
