A system and method for real time ramping, up or down, of computer processing units (CPUs) in operation based on available power from a variable power generation asset is disclosed. The system is configured with a power detection unit to analyze power provided from the variable power generation asset without the need for complex and expensive custom engineering integration. The power detection unit is configured to analyze voltage along the voltage mains line from the supplied power and apply a test load comparable to the load of one or more CPUs in a manner which does not negatively impact the CPUs already in operation. The system is able to ramp up CPUs in operation when additional power is available and ramp down CPUs when power is declining to avoid cycling of the computers when power demands exceed power availability. The system enables optimized operation of CPUs within a data center and can be implemented through a power control unit or a software control unit.
