Abstract
An electromagnetic radiation collecting and directing apparatus is described herein. The electromagnetic radiation collecting and directing apparatus facilitates directing light from an exterior of a structure to an interior of a structure. The directed light is then distributed as necessary within the structure for heating, illumination, or is stored for use at a later time.
Claims20
An electromagnetic radiation (EMR) collecting and directing apparatus comprising:
- a heliostat configured to reflect EMR from a source;
- a hollow shaft having a first aperture configured to receive the EMR from the heliostat and an output aperture configured to deliver the EMR to a destination within or associated with a structure;
- an optical device associated with the hollow shaft, configured to direct the EMR to the output aperture;
- wherein the first aperture comprises a Fresnel lens;
- wherein a thermal storage device is configured to receive EMR through the output aperture.
2 more elements
A method of directing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) comprising the steps of:
- receiving EMR at a first aperture of a reflective hollow shaft via a heliostat;
- directing, via an optical device associated with the hollow shaft, the EMR to an output aperture of the hollow shaft;
- delivering via the optical device the electromagnetic radiation to the output aperture to store EMR energy in a thermal storage device;
- wherein the first aperture comprises a Fresnel lens;
- wherein the first aperture and output aperture alter or redirect the EMR.
2 more elements
A system for distributing and storing thermal energy comprising:
- a heliostat configured to reflect EMR;
- a hollow shaft having a first aperture receiving the EMR and an output aperture configured to deliver the EMR to a heat exchanger within a structure or to a thermal energy storage device;
- an optical device associated with the hollow shaft, configured to direct the EMR to the output aperture to illuminate an interior area of the structure;
- wherein the first aperture comprises a Fresnel lens.
