Abstract
Protective garments are disclosed having fabric treated with a water resistant treatment. The water resistant treatment includes a combination of a water resistant concentrate and a solvent. In accordance with the present disclosure, the water resistant treatment is substantially free of fluorocarbon chemicals and yet provides not only excellent water resistance, but also excellent breathability and comfort. The water resistant treatment may be particularly applicable for use in reapplications.
Claims29
A process for treating a garment comprising fibers, the process comprising:
- loading the garment into a garment extractor, the garment extractor being a washing machine;
- mixing a solvent with a water resistant concentrate in the garment extractor to form a water resistant treatment, wherein the water resistant concentrate is substantially fluorocarbon free, wherein the water resistant treatment comprises the solvent;
- contacting the garment with the water resistant treatment in the garment extractor such that a water resistant composition impregnates the fibers of the garment, the water resistant treatment having a temperature from about 30° C. to about 90° C., the water resistant treatment contacting the garment for a dwell time of about 15 minutes or more;
- drying the garment in a garment drying device such that the water resistant composition is cured and affixed to the fibers of the garment;
- and
- wherein the garment has a water absorption of less than about 15% according to NFPA 1971-2018, 8.25 after drying the garment in the garment drying device.
