Abstract
Methods of scavenging formaldehyde from passing air such as in the interior of buildings by exposing a cured coating composition to passing air. The coating composition includes a binder, pigment, and a formaldehyde scrubbing urea compound. A cured coating formed from the coating composition absorbs formaldehyde and other air pollutants from passing air.
Claims21
A method of causing a coated substrate to scavenge formaldehyde from passing air comprising:
- exposing a cured coating on a substrate to passing air,
- the cured coating formed from an aqueous coating composition, the coating composition including at least an aqueous carrier liquid, a polymeric binder, one or more additives, and a urea compound present in an amount of at most 1.5 weight percent based on the weight of the aqueous coating composition,
- wherein the urea compound has the formula
- where R1, R2, R3, and R4 are each independently a linear or branched alkyl group or aromatic group or hydrogen.
