Abstract
A novel method of making trialkylaluminum compounds and trialkylaluminum obtained thereby via exposing a solution of aluminum to an alkylating agent.
Claims12
A method of making trialkylaluminum by reaction of trialkylgallium with metallic aluminum in the presence of metallic gallium, comprising the steps of
- (a) providing a liquid saturated solution of aluminum in gallium;
- (b) adding solid aluminum to the saturated solution so as to form a reaction mixture;
- (c) continuously passing a gas flow comprising trialkylgallium under an inert carrier gas through said reaction mixture at temperatures of from 25 to 100° C. and a pressure of 500 to 1500 hPa;
- (d) simultaneously distilling off the trialkylaluminum generated during step (c), wherein the trialkylgallium is added to the reaction mixture continuously.

- (b) adding solid aluminum to the saturated solution so as to form a reaction mixture;
- (c) continuously passing a gas flow comprising trialkylgallium under an inert carrier gas through said reaction mixture at temperatures of from 25 to 100° C. and a pressure of 500 to 1500 hPa;
- (d) simultaneously distilling of the trialkylaluminum generated during step (c);
- and
- (e) recovering the trialkylaluminum isolated by distillation wherein the trialkylgallium is added to the reaction mixture continuously.
