Abstract
A school bus stop arm and drive unit therefor are disclosed. The stop arm includes a stop sign and a drive unit for moving the stop sign between a retracted position and a deployed position. In some embodiments the stop sign is illuminated. In some embodiments the drive unit includes a controller.
Claims27
A stop arm for a school bus comprising:
- a stop sign including:
- a frame defining an area to be illuminated having a written stop message surrounded by a backdrop, the area to be illuminated having the shape of an octagon or an octagon with one or more cutouts, and
- an internal illumination device comprising a plurality of LEDs that, upon activation, illuminate the area to be illuminated;
- and
- a drive unit mountable to a side of the school bus for selectively moving the stop sign between a deployed position and a retracted position.

A stop arm for a school bus comprising:
- a stop sign including:
- a frame having an octagonal sign section, the sign section defining a space,
- a stop lamp being installed within the space, the stop lamp having an internal illumination device comprising LEDs, that, when activated, illuminate an octagonal stop insignia comprising of a written stop message on a backdrop such that a complete octagon or an octagon with one or more cutouts is illuminated;
- and
- a drive unit mountable to a side of the school bus for selectively moving the stop sign between a deployed position and a retracted position.
