Abstract
In various embodiments, wire composed at least partially of arc-melted refractory metal material is utilized to fabricate three-dimensional parts by additive manufacturing.
Claims14
A method of fabricating a wire comprising a metallic material, the method comprising:
- (a) providing powder by a process comprising at least one of plasma densification or plasma atomization;
- (b) compacting the powder to form a feed electrode, the powder comprising the metallic material;
- (c) arc-melting the feed electrode in a processing ambient comprising a vacuum or one or more inert gases, thereby forming a billet;
- (d) densifying the billet by pressing;
- and
- (e) mechanically deforming the billet into wire having a diameter less than a diameter of the billet.

A method for fabricating a structure comprising a metallic material, the method comprising:
- (a) providing powder by a process comprising at least one of plasma densification or plasma atomization, the powder comprising the metallic material;
- (b) compacting the powder to form a feed electrode;
- (c) sintering the feed electrode;
- (d) arc-melting the feed electrode to yield a billet;
- and
- (e) densifying the billet after arc-melting by pressing, wherein the densifying comprises at least one of cold isostatic pressing or hot isostatic pressing to yield the structure;
- wherein the metallic material comprises at least one of niobium, tantalum, rhenium, tungsten, or molybdenum.
