Abstract
A nasal cannula for use in a system for providing a flow of respiratory gases to a user is described. The nasal cannula comprises a body made from a pliable material. The body has an inlet and at least one nasal prong fluidly connected to the inlet. In use a conduit providing a flow of gases to the cannula is connected to the inlet, and the nasal prong is inserted into a user's nostril. The cannula is arranged to direct the flow of gases from the nasal prong towards the front wall of the user's nasal passage within the user's nose.
Claims20
A cannula assembly for providing a flow of respiratory gases to a user, comprising:
- a cannula body that is resilient and flexible and configured to contact a user's upper lip region in use, the cannula body comprising:
- at least one nasal prong configured to extend into a user's nostril in use, but not sealing to the user's nostril;
- and
- a manifold comprising an inlet for receiving a conduit, the inlet being fluidly connected to the at least one nasal prong;
- a frame that is at least semi-rigid and provides support to the cannula assembly, the frame comprising a first frame side arm and a second frame side arm extending from a central portion, the first frame side arm and the second frame side arm configured to be positioned along opposing sides of a user's face, the first frame side arm and the second frame side arm configured to attach the cannula assembly to a headgear;
- wherein the cannula body is positioned between the frame and the user's face in use;
- wherein a portion of the cannula body is configured to be bent to be doubled over on itself substantially without plastic deformation, and the frame is capable of elastic deflection;
- wherein the frame has a first projection configured to engage the conduit, to secure the conduit to the frame;
- and
- wherein the cannula body further comprises a first cannula body side arm and a second cannula body side arm extending from a respective one of opposing sides of a central portion of the cannula body, wherein at least a portion of each of the first cannula body side arm and the second cannula body side arm extends along each of the respective one of the first frame side arm and the second frame side arm at least to a connection configured to attach the headgear to the frame.
A nasal cannula assembly for providing a flow of respiratory gases to a user comprising:
- a cannula body that is resilient and flexible, the cannula body comprising:
- two nasal prongs extending from the cannula body, and
- an inlet for receiving a conduit, the inlet being fluidly connected to the two nasal prongs;
- a frame comprising a first side arm and a second side arm extending from a central portion of the frame, the first side arm and second side arm extending in opposing directions from a central portion of the frame, wherein the frame is at least semi rigid and provides support to the nasal cannula assembly, the first side arm and the second side arm configured to attach the nasal cannula assembly to a headgear;
- wherein the cannula body is pliable;
- wherein the cannula body can be elastically deformed easily without noticeable plastic deformation, each of the first side arm and the second side arm is angled upwards from the central portion of the cannula body;
- wherein a frame material has a higher stiffness compared to a cannula body material;
- wherein the cannula body is removably attached to the frame, the frame comprising a first projection configured to engage the conduit to secure the conduit to the frame, wherein the first projection is a flange that engages a conduit connector;
- and
- wherein the first projection is a first flange configured to be substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the conduit and to engage about a circumference of the conduit near an end of the conduit, the first flange having a hole having an opening on one side for receiving the conduit, a diameter of the hole being corresponding to an external diameter of the circumference, a width of the opening being less than the external diameter of the circumference, in use the frame being elastically deformed during attachment to the conduit.
A nasal cannula assembly for providing a flow of respiratory gases to a user comprising:
- a cannula body configured to contact a user's upper lip region, the cannula body comprising:
- a pair of nasal prongs extending from the cannula body, and
- an inlet for receiving a conduit, the inlet being fluidly connected to the pair of nasal prongs;
- a frame integrally moulded with the cannula body, wherein the frame comprises a material that has a higher stiffness compared to the cannula body;
- a first side arm and a second side arm extending outwardly in opposing directions from a central portion of the frame,
- wherein the first side arm and the second side arm are configured to be positioned along opposing sides of a user's face,
- wherein each of the first side arm and second side arm is angled backwards from the central portion towards the user's face in use,
- wherein a distal end of each of the first side arm and the second side arm is provided with a quick release connector to attach or disconnect a headgear to or from the nasal cannula assembly;
- and
- wherein the inlet of the cannula body is an aperture configured to receive an end of the conduit, wherein in use a rim around the aperture is sandwiched between a first flange and a surface extending radially from the conduit adjacent a circumference, sealingly engaging the inlet to the conduit, and wherein the cannula body has an annular groove extending about the aperture for receiving the surface extending radially from the conduit.
