Abstract
Disclosed are systems and methods for determining a dose of insulin that compensates for past carbohydrates consumed, adjusts for blood glucose (BG) trend as well as BG value, and mitigates potential inaccuracies associated with double-counting or overcorrecting, where safeguards are applied to the determination of the insulin dose.
Claims19
A method for determining a recommended dose of insulin to administer to a user of an insulin delivery device using a dose calculator, comprising:
- determining a plurality of dose calculator parameters for a patient user of an insulin delivery device, including a blood glucose correction parameter, a carbohydrates cover parameter, an insulin on board (IOB) parameter, a glucose trend adjustment parameter, and a carbohydrates on board (COB) adjustment parameter for the patient user, wherein:
- the COB adjustment parameter includes a quotient of an estimated value for unmetabolized carbohydrates ingested from recent meals by the patient user and an insulin-to-carbohydrates ratio of the patient user;
- and
- the blood glucose correction parameter includes a difference value between a current glucose level of the patient user and a quotient of a target glucose level and a sensitivity factor of the patient user;
- calculating an insulin dose recommendation based on an estimated sum of the blood glucose correction parameter, the glucose trend adjustment parameter, the carbohydrates cover parameter and the COB adjustment parameter subtracted by the IOB parameter;
- determining a confidence value for the glucose trend adjustment parameter, wherein determining the confidence value includes, for each use of the dose calculator:
- predicting a blood glucose response after administration of the insulin dose recommendation;
- determining a measured blood glucose response after administration of the insulin dose recommendation;
- determining a percent error based on a difference between the predicted blood glucose response and the measured blood glucose response;
- and
- determining the confidence value based on a running average of the percent error over a plurality of uses of the dose calculator;
- comparing the confidence value to a minimum threshold confidence value;
- omitting the glucose trend adjustment parameter from the calculation of the insulin dose recommendation until a minimum number of uses of the dose calculator is achieved and the confidence value attains the minimum threshold confidence value;
- and
- administering the calculated insulin dose recommendation with the insulin delivery device.

A system, comprising:
- a processor configured to provide a calculated insulin dose recommendation to an insulin delivery device;
- and
- a memory storing instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the performance of a method comprising:
- determining a glucose trend adjustment parameter for the insulin delivery device using a dose calculator;
- calculating the insulin dose recommendation based on an estimated sum of a plurality of dose parameters for the insulin delivery device including the glucose trend adjustment parameter;
- determining a confidence value for the glucose trend adjustment parameter, wherein determining the confidence value includes:
- predicting a blood glucose response after administration of the insulin dose recommendation;
- determining a measured blood glucose response after administration of the insulin dose recommendation;
- determining a percent error based on a difference between the predicted blood glucose response and the measured blood glucose response;
- and
- determining the confidence value based on a running average of the percent error over a plurality of uses of the dose calculator;
- comparing the confidence value to a minimum threshold confidence value;
- and
- omitting the glucose trend adjustment parameter from the calculation of the insulin dose recommendation until a minimum number of uses of the dose calculator is achieved and the confidence value attains the minimum threshold confidence value;
- and
- providing the calculated insulin dose recommendation to the insulin delivery device for administering insulin using the insulin delivery device;
- and
- the insulin delivery device configured to deliver the calculated insulin dose recommendation provided by the processor.
