Abstract
A dual chamber syringes for administration of a hormone encapsulated by a hydrogel polymer is described. The dual chamber syringe includes a first chamber, a second chamber, a separator, and a plunger. The first chamber includes a crosslinked methacrylate hyaluronic acid (MHA) polymer that encapsulates the hormone. The crosslinked MHA polymer is the hydrogel polymer. The second chamber has a diluent for the crosslinked MHA polymer. The separator separates the first chamber from the second chamber. Piercing or bypassing the separator generates a mixture that includes the diluent and the crosslinked MHA polymer that encapsulates the hormone. The plunger forces the mixture through a needle.
Claims19
A dual chamber syringe for administering a steroid hormone encapsulated by a hydrogel polymer, the dual chamber syringe comprising:
- a first chamber that includes a crosslinked methacrylate hyaluronic acid (MHA) polymer that encapsulates the steroid hormone in the form of a plurality of hydrogel microparticles, wherein the crosslinked MHA polymer is the hydrogel polymer;
- wherein the steroid hormone is selected from the group consisting of testosterone, estradiol, and the combination thereof;
- wherein the crosslinked MHA polymer is generated by applying an ultraviolet light to an uncrosslinked MHA mixture that includes the steroid hormone, methacrylate hyaluronic acid, and sodium hyaluronate;
- wherein the plurality of hydrogel microparticles are formulated for subcutaneous administration and to provide controlled release of the steroid hormone over a period of at least one (1) week;
- a second chamber having a diluent for the crosslinked MHA polymer;
- a separator that separates the first chamber from the second chamber, wherein piercing the separator generates a mixture that includes the diluent and the crosslinked MHA polymer that encapsulates the steroid hormone;
- and
- a plunger that forces the mixture through a needle.

- wherein the plurality of hydrogel microparticles are formulated for subcutaneous administration and to provide controlled release of the steroid hormone over a period of at least one (1) week;
- a second chamber having a diluent for the crosslinked MHA polymer;
- a separator that separates the first chamber from the second chamber when the separator is in a first position;
- a bypass that connects the first chamber to the second chamber when the separator is in a second position;
- wherein moving the separator from the first position to the second position generates a mixture that includes the diluent and the crosslinked MHA polymer that encapsulates the steroid hormone;
- and
- a plunger that forces the mixture through a needle.
