Abstract
An apparatus for decompressive therapy applied to the human spine. The apparatus incorporates a decompression actuator or motor connected to an attachment point on a pelvic harness, which is in turn applied to the lumbar region of a patient. The decompression motor may be raised or lowered in order to orient the pelvic harness about the lumbar spine, thereby aligning certain of the lumbar vertebra and intervertebral discs. The decompression motor applies cyclical decompressive forces to the aligned spine, providing enhanced lumbar decompression.
Claims18
An apparatus for piecewise spinal decompression therapy comprising:
- a decompression actuator disposed adjacent to a therapy bed;
- a decompression connection secured at a first end to the decompression actuator and at a second end to an attachment point of a pelvic harness;
- a first amplifier connected to the decompression actuator;
- and
- a computer connected to the first amplifier;
- wherein the computer is operable to control the first amplifier;
- wherein the computer controls the first amplifier according to a piecewise logarithmic decompression profile comprising a logarithmic loading phase and an unloading phase;
- wherein the unloading phase comprises an unloading transition segment and a minimum spinal decompressive segment;
- wherein the minimum spinal decompressive segment comprises an entry transition segment and an exit transition segment;
- wherein the unloading transition segment has a transition duration and the minimum spinal decompressive segment has a duration approximately twice the transition duration;
- and
- wherein at least one of the entry transition segment and the exit transition segment of the minimum spinal decompression segment is governed by a sigmoid function.
An apparatus for piecewise spinal decompression therapy comprising:
- a therapy bed having a generally-horizontal orientation and a base;
- a decompression actuator disposed adjacent to the base of the therapy bed;

- wherein the minimum spinal decompressive segment comprises an entry transition segment and an exit transition segment;
- wherein the unloading transition segment has a transition duration and the minimum spinal decompressive segment has a duration approximately twice the transition duration;
- and
- wherein at least one of the entry transition segment and the exit transition segment of the minimum spinal decompression segment is governed by a sigmoid function.
An apparatus for piecewise spinal decompression therapy comprising:
- a generally-horizontal therapy bed having a generally-horizontal orientation, a base, an upper surface, a first end and a second end;
